A Sunday morning in May at The Lane and a big expectant crowd .
The league was on the line , a strong Wasps team had arrived , and the boys knew what they had to do .
We kicked off going uphill and the tone of the match was set early . Wasps were committed and well drilled at the breakdown , our tackling was aggressive and accurate .
Following a scrappy start , the power of our defence started to show and after a tackle by Matt in midfield the ball broke loose and Eddie fly hacked through , showed good pace to regather and get over the line . One to soothe the nerves .
Wasps came back strong and kept us pegged back into our own half until another turnover led to a breakaway up the right wing . Good work from Fraser saw the ball recycled quickly and eventually Sid playing in his last game in the back row crashed over under the posts . Charlie added the extras .
Wasps came straight back and put us under 10 minutes of massive pressure in our own 22 . This was where the training and resilience of the team came through . At a critical stage of the game , the blue wall held strong with great line speed and tackle technique keeping out a big Wasps pack across multiple phases . Tom C , Rutts and Ollie all putting in massive hits .
Just before the break we broke free again and the Bishop showed his customary blend of power and pace to finish of a counter attack and sprint in from inside his own half .
17/0 at the break but we knew the job was only half done .
The lads turned around and immediately fronted up to the Wasps team who were looking to a fast start to the second half . A brilliant tap tackle from Bobby kept the clean sheet intact and then a bit of indiscipline crept in with both backs and forwards testing the referee’s patience with the offside line .
After multiple penalties Eddie saw yellow but Hertford kept up the pressure with 14 men and a superb break from Harry down the left wing gave Bish the chance to go over under the sticks for his second . .
Back to a full complement we continued our defensive effort to repel multiple Wasps attacks with the boys committed to keeping a clean sheet . With 5 minutes to go Bish completed a well deserved hat-trick and it was over .
A hard game against a well coached team who were good players on the pitch and a great bunch of guys off it , but this was our day .
The commitment from the players across the whole season meant they got their reward and finish the season unbeaten in the league and deserving champions .
The music , cheers and laughter coming out of the changing room showed how much it meant to them and it has been a genuine pleasure to see them develop as players and more importantly as men .
Thanks for the memories , now go and enjoy the summer !
