It is with regret that we have to pass on news of the death of Tony Dodds at the age
of 86.
Tony continued to play his rugby at Hertford into his late 50s or possibly even 60s ,
Playing regularly for the 'Pacemakers and guesting as a ‘Termite’ on occasions. He became
one of our dedicated volunteers, acting as one of our regular duty officers from 2004
to 2018. I think he may even have stepped in with some emergency assistance on the
odd occasion after that.
Tony was a quiet and unassuming man, the epitome of the gentle giant, yet under
that gentle façade was a steely grit and determination to ensure fair play, not only on
the rugby field but in life.
An incredibly bright individual, Tony utilized his degree from Oxford to the benefit of
others by becoming a dedicated educator.
He worked in several parts of Africa and became a great advocate for open and
distance learning, becoming Executive Director of the International Extension
College, Cambridge and then Professor and Director of the Centre for External
Studies at the University of Namibia.
But to us he was Tony, the big gentle ‘Lefty’ who enjoyed a pint of bitter and a Rugby
natter.
Our condolences go to his family.
A life well lived.
