Tony's committal service for Tony will be held at Wollensbrook crematorium in Hoddesdon at 12.00 pm on Mon 21st August, followed by a further celebration of his life at Hertford RFC in Hoe Lane, Ware.
As club steward and manager he and his wife Pam arrived at the start of the 1991 season and finally hung up the till keys in 2013.
They retired up the road to Bennington but was a regular supporter when time and health allowed.
It takes great people to make a great club and certainly Tony played his part in making the club what it is today.
Known and loved not only by the home crowd but he became well a favourite all around the county and further afield for his warmth and hospitality, even when it was dressed up as pseudo insults and irreverent banter!
Never short of an opinion, he was also a decent bar room barrister and late night agony aunt to those in need.
Whilst an avid Hertford supporter, I believe he only ever played one game for Hertford and it was his last game, around the time of his 50th birthday. As part of a side of mainly recently retired players he played his part in a 50 odd point victory against a sprightly young side whose warm up talk consisted of “ They’re just a bunch of fat old gits” That’s a 100% win record for ‘Odd Job’ in a Hertford shirt.
Hertford may have been his home but his heart was always at Old Tottonians and late into the evening we would be entertained (or maybe forced to listen to!) stories of his weirdly named team mates from yesteryear and their even stranger antics.
Tony was not someone who worked at Hertford RFC, he was one of us. He was always keen to spot young players in the youth set up follow their career path. I recall a conversation many years ago when he advised that we watch a decent young player in the U14’s called Alfie Church. Well he got that one right.
Prior to Hertford, Tony ran the squash club in Broxbourne and was also a keen member of Hertford squash club when we had the courts at Hoe lane. Always an avid social media contributor, he was still in contact with many of those from his sporting and social background.
Our condolences go out to Pam, Sarah Vicki, Sharon and the Grandchildren.
He was a lovely man, a good friend and I will miss him.
It would be great to hear your memories of him.
