Sad loss of a club Vice President

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of a club Vice President on Christmas Eve 2025 following a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Simon, whilst never playing for Hertford, was an enthusiastic supporter of the club and a proud Welshman (we didn’t hold that against him!) and there was never any doubt that at least one of his children would play at HRFC following he and his wife Jen making Ware their home.

Simon and his son Mark joined the club some 21 years ago (2004) when Mark was 4, Simon helped to coach the age group, and also trained and qualified as a referee to assist further.

HRFC were lucky that when Covid struck, Simon, a very level headed scientist (working at Glaxo) was persuaded to take on the role of club Covid Officer, analysing the ever changing and challenging dictats from both the government and RFU, he managed to keep the club on the right side of the regulations, whilst deploying common sense and keeping the members safe. We forever owe him a debt of gratitude for the way he carried out that role.

His support for the club extended long after Mark stopped playing, attending lunches, matches and social functions such as the annual quiz night. The carols were always a favourite and no one who stood near him during Bread of Heaven could be in doubt of his passion for his homeland.

It is with great sadness that we offer our sincere condolences to his wife Jen (VP) his children Katie and Mark and their families.

Simon’s funeral will take place on the 20th January, 3pm at Wollensbrook Cemetery and Crematorium, Hoddesdon and afterwards the family warmly invite you to join them at Hertford Rugby Club.

Family Flowers only please but donations will be welcomed for Pancreatic Cancer UK and the Isabel Hospice.

Rest well my friend
