An Old Hertfordian and club stalwart of the 1950s and 60s, Doug was captain of the very successful B (4th) XV 1959-63 and with others, such as Wally Ling and Kevin Toomey, he ran the bar in the old clubhouse, at a time when there was virtually no security. There were no bar shutters, the spirits had to be locked away in the safe every Saturday night and the bar takings had to be taken home. Doug helped run the bar at a time when there were no paid staff.

Doug’s day to day involvement with the club came to an end when he was posted to Australia by his employers the Australia-New Zealand Bank. Before he went abroad he was instrumental in arranging a succession of enjoyable Sunday matches with his Bank’s team.
He was a VP for 48 years and his passing leaves Peter Creasey as the only VP left from the 1972 vintage.

Doug leaves a daughter, Becky and a son, Nick (better known as Stick) who many of us remember as an outstanding flanker of the 1990s and 2000s.
