Alan (Ginner) Findlay RIP
Sadly, Alan Findlay, an Old Hertfordian, died on Thursday 8th July aged 93.
He joined the club in the late 1940’s playing for the 1st XV for a number of years into the 1950s with many other Old Hertfordian school friends including Alan Merriman, Dick Crook and the Blackeby brothers. Usually playing full back, he was part of a team that counted many successes in their matches. He was also one of the members who helped build the first clubhouse, amongst other things helping dig the utilities trench from the road to the club!
His big passions, apart from food and wine, were sailing and skiing. He was Hon Skipper of the Old Hertfordians Sailing Association, venturing on many sailing trips including the first Old Hertfordians voyage from the West Country to Belgium (with the course charted in advance by Hon Navigator Alan Merriman in his RAF plane flying the route!). When he acquired his own boat in the 1970s, he introduced many members of Hertford Rugby Club to the joys of sailing to France and beyond. With Martin Roat, they sailed in a number of ARC races across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to the Carribean.
It was whilst skiing in Austria in the 1960’s that he met his wife Ulla and they were married for over 55 years. Annual skiing trips to Hochsolden in Austria often involved plenty of Old Hertfordians joining including the likes of Richard Chiverell and Richard Hodder.
After graduating from the London School of Economics, he initially worked for the merchant bank Arbuthnot Latham but soon moved into business. He worked for many years for Shell, including 2 years based in New York running the US marketing business. After time with McKinsey’s in Germany, he returned to the UK, where he worked for Slater Walker before becoming Chairman of Lewston, a London stock market listed property and construction business. His last business role was running Fabrique Nationale in Belgium
He had a long life, full of adventure and a lot of travel. He will be much missed by his family and friends.
