A view from the Balcony

A view from the Balcony

Mother always said there would be days like this.

A disappointing outing last time out against Letchworth but they say you learn more from a loss than you do from a win. But then, mother always said there would be days like this.

Nobody, least of all the players involved, would begrudge Letchworth their deserved victory, The big difference was they took their chances well and we fell at the last hurdle on too many occasions. That's all part of the learning curve.

A great coach once told me rugby is an easy game. You just catch the ball and score a try. If you don't think you're going to score give it to someone in a better position than you and if there isn't anyone, then hold on to the ball till help comes. The best players and teams are the ones who know how and when to make the right choices and it takes time to accumulate that wisdom.

We have been laying those foundations over the last 18 months but the deeper the foundations, the longer they need to set.

The lads have put in some very good performances lately but there will always be weeks when things don't go to plan. Your analyse, work out why and how to address it and move on.

After another rest week, Saturday sees both the 1s and 2s on a northern road trip to Old Northamptonians RFC. To my knowledge, this is the 1st meeting of the 2 clubs at this senior level, certainly in league rugby. Multiple teams against one opposition was was always the staple in rugby and is great for club bonding, so it's great to see that we are able to it a few times this season. May it continue and grow.

Old Northamptonians are one place above us in the league and on the same points with equivalent results this season. After gaining promotion and a level transfer following a successful league campaign, having won 19 out of their 20 league games, they were also winners of the Papa John's region 2 cup last season, sealing victory against Horsham RFC at Twickenham. It promises to be a close and entertaining game, as long as the weather gods are not angry.

Conditions look as though they may play a part, with rain forecast, so handling and playing the conditions correctly could be critical.

Skipper Josh Hewitt (that boy likes a bit of sunshine) has recovered from the bad back that saw him leave the field early in the Letchworth game.

Hem Johal returns to 10 while Lemon moves back to the wing at the expense of Hugo Creasey.

David Hale starts from the bench as Dom Merrick comes in as starting 9.

If you do get a chance, take a look at the 2's for a bit. It looks like a good side with an impressive back line.

Skipper Josh Hewitt (pictorially featured kicking the ball, what's that all about) also chose this week to propose to his girlfriend, Taylor, and she said yes. Congratulations from all at HRFC. I feel another pernod coming on.

So, if you can make the journey the boys will appreciate the support and let's see if the swirly custard threads can inspire a dizzying performance.

See you there, mine's a Guinness.
