A Pre-Season Message from Marcus Cattell, 1stXV Head Coach

"I’d like to start by saying what an honour it is to be given the opportunity to be the 1stXV head coach at this fantastic club. Something I’d never thought I would say, but it’s funny how things turn out…

We started our pre season journey way back on Tuesday 1st July, and from the outset the hardwork and commitment from the players, coaches and medical team has been excellent.

I’ve been really pleased with the performances in the three preseason matches we have played, against some very testing opposition. It’s highlighted areas we still need to work on but also shown the ability this group has, the exciting part is we are only scratching the surface!!

As we all know, the pre season games are there to prepare the group for the upcoming league season. There is no hiding the fact that we face an incredibly difficult first game away to North Walsham, I have though, the upmost confidence we can go and deliver a performance.

The squad itself is in pretty good condition currently, just under 40 players have pulled the shirt on in the 3 games to date. Sonny Swift, Louis Kendrick & Josh Hewitt continue to rehab their long term injuries and we hope to see them back in October/November time. Morgan Jackson suffered an ankle injury at Camberley, cleared of a fracture we await further news on his return to play. Almost a fully fit squad to pick from for the league opener, there are also a few new faces within the squad and these lads have integrated well into the group.

Steff Jones will be continuing as 1stXV skipper, with Joe Tracy and Ben Gilchrist as vice captains. A great blend of experience, well respected and talented leaders for our young exciting group.

We are buzzing to get out and show all the Hertford supporters, members and sponsors what we have been working on over pre season. We hope you continue to get behind the lads home and away, your support won’t go unnoticed.

Lastly I’d like to thank everyone at the club who has made me feel welcome, I look forward to meeting more of you throughout the season and sharing a beer or two at the bar post game. Here’s to a great season".
